U.K. lawmakers have voted to delay Boris Johnson's Brexit deal and amend the law, forcing the prime minister to ask the European Union for a delay to the October 31 deadline.
Johnson announced Thursday that he had agreed to a new Brexit deal with EU leaders, but the agreement still needed to be approved by Parliament for the U.K. to leave the EU. Lawmakers then voted Saturday morning in favor of an amendment to the Brexit legislation by a margin of 322 to 306, which would have forced Johnson to ask for another delay until all the legislation required to extricate UK from the EU passed into law.
Johnson has repeatedly ruled out asking EU leaders for an extension to the Brexit deadline. He is expected to cancel Saturday's vote on his deal and move it next week, despite the U.K. Parliament sitting in on a Saturday for the first time in nearly four decades to vote on his deal.
