MOSCOW—Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russia separatists began to exchange dozens of prisoners, a small step toward a rapprochement between two sides that have been engaged in a slow-burning conflict for almost six years.
On Sunday, the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic agreed to hand over 55 prisoners to Kyiv, while 87 government detainees were returned to the separatists, a representative of the DPR in east Ukraine was cited as saying by Ukrainian and Russian media outlets.
