Ultraviolet coating can help zap away bacteria—even superbugs

"We hope for public usage, but have to be cautious people stay safe from the UV LEDs – that specific light harms the skin and the eyes," Kubis says."In any case, surfaces have to be physically cleaned from any dust or dirt. Otherwise, the light will get absorbed before it reaches germs. We envision this technology will be initially utilized in commercial and institutional environment.

Currently, operators of UVC lamps roll the lamps to several spots in the hospital rooms and set a timer for the lamp to run about 30 minutes, Kubis explains. Each time, they have to leave the room while the lamp is on. UVC is ultraviolet light in the C spectrum that can be used for disinfection."Instead of rolling the lamp/robot to the right places that would not cast too many shadows, this technology is," Kubis says.

The entire room could be covered by the Purdue material, and the method is energy-efficient, requiring less power than UV lamps, Kubis says. Operators would just need to keep their distance to avoid being sunburned. Kubis said the technology has been under development for about a year, and experimental work will take at least another year.
