United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the beginning of a fact-finding mission regarding last month’s attack on a Ukrainian detention facility that resulted in the deaths of at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war.
Both Ukraine and Russia denied responsibility for the strike, while both governments also requested an investigation, which Guterres unveiled on Wednesday.Russia invited U.N. and Red Cross experts to conduct an “objective investigation” into the deaths of the Ukrainian prisoners held at the Olenivka jail in the Donetsk region, the Russian Defense Ministry said over the weekend, while the Red Cross told CNN on Saturday that its “demands for access” to the site have not been approved.
A senior military official told reporters last week that the Pentagon couldn’t definitively confirm who launched the strike but advised reporters to “apply some caution specifically to what the Russians are telling us, just because we know that they have made several claims in the past that have not been close to correct.”
Soldiers from the Ukrainian nationalist Azov Regiment and other Ukrainian units sheltered inside the underground tunnels of the sprawling Azovstal steel plant for months as Russian forces fought for control of the port city of Mariupol and surrounded the facility. They surrendered in May after near constant bombardment by Russian missiles and artillery.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry intelligence department said on Wednesday that the Wagner Group, a private military contracting group whose fighters have been involved in the war in Ukraine in addition to conflicts in Africa and the Middle East, was responsible for the attack, according to the outlet.The war in Ukraine has remained in the eastern part of the country for the summer, though Russian forces have continued to fire upon other parts through the air.
