Following the release of footage of Tyre Nichols’s death at the hands of the Memphis Police Department’s SCORPION Unit, the department announced in a statement that it would “permanently deactivate” the unit.

In a press release shared by the PD’s official Twitter account, they wrote, “In the process of listening intently to the family of Tyre Nichols, community leaders, and the uninvolved officers who have done quality work in their assignments, it is in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit. The officers currently assigned to the unit agree unreservedly with this next step.
Since the release of the footage, Nichols’ mother RowVaughn Wells has said she hasn’t watched any of it. "I don't need to see a video to show me what they did,” she said to theOutcry from organizers and activists across the country has continued to pour in throughout the weekend.
