UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan was reported dead on Friday at 73 by the Emirati state news agency WAM.
"The Ministry of Presidential Affairs has mourned to the UAE people, Arab and Islamic nations, and the world the death of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who passed away on Friday, 13th May 2022," the news agency wrote on Twitter.
“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced that there will be 40 days of official mourning with flags at half-mast and three days closure of ministries and official entities at the federal and local levels and the private sector," the agency added.The president was elected to succeed his father, Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, in 2004 after he died.
He has not been involved in day-to-day affairs in recent years and has had his brother Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan act as the de facto ruler in his stead.
