Ohio State University has its John Glenn Center of Public Affairs. Ohio University has the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service. Now, the University of Cincinnati will partner with Ohio’s newest ex-U.S. Senator.

to help pay for a long-awaited expansion of Cincinnati’s overburdened Brent Spence Bridge, which currently handles double the traffic it was designed for.

Portman said that sort of collaboration “is the only way to find solutions to our nation’s toughest problems,” and said he hopes some of his infrastructure, retirement security and anti-drug legislation could be used “as a case study for how you can come together from different points of view to solve problems.”

“The main purpose of this is to allow young people to know that there is a way to serve in public service in a way that is productive, where you are engaging in a respectful way with others to find solutions,” Portman added. “My hope is this will be something that is important to University of Cincinnati and to students and also to be an inspiration beyond the student body. It can be something that can help change the national trend away from polarization and divisiveness to solve problems.

“The vision of the Portman Center advances our mutual interest in building trust in democratic institutions and civil political exchange,” said a statement from University of Cincinnati’s school of public and international affairs director Richard Harknett. “It will make a tremendous impact for decades to come in advancing policy solutions through a new generation of citizen-leaders committed to democratic processes.
