. Hamill found “Jingle Bells; or, The One Horse Open Sleigh,” was first performed in public at an 1857 minstrel show in Boston with white performers in blackface.

“I, in no way, recommended that it stopped being sung by children,” she said. “My article tried to tell the story of the first performance of the song, I do not connect this to the popular Christmas tradition of singing the song now... I would say it should very much be sung and enjoyed, and perhaps discussed.”

Some community members told WHAM that they were disappointed by the school’s decision, while others argued that it’s appropriate to retire a tradition if it has a racist past.
