The Urban League of NWI is taking steps to remove Purdue University Northwest Chancellor Thomas Keon from its Board of Directors in the continuing fallout from Keon’s racist remarks at a Dec. 10 commencement ceremony.

Keon didn’t resign from the board by the Jan. 9 deadline the organization gave him, prompting a meeting among the organization’s executive committee late Tuesday afternoon, its President and CEO Vanessa Allen-McCloud said Wednesday. In his Jan. 6 response to its request, Allen-McCloud said he wrote that he was “disheartened” by the request and asked if he could have a “closed conversation” with the executive board. But there’s no reason to have a conversation as the time for that started Dec.

Keon’s remarks in during commencement lit up social media and prompted several online petitions that advised Purdue to relieve him of his duties. After keynote speaker Jim Dedelow talked about a made-up language he created to entertain his new granddaughter, Keon came back to the podium and said, “Well, all I can say is” and proceeded to speak in a made-up language that sounded as if he were trying to speak Chinese.

Allen-McCloud said she’s reached out to the Urban League’s National President and CEO Marc Morial for “further guidance” on the matter. Morial told the Post-Tribune last week that the organization “doesn’t want to put our reputation on the line .” Earlier this week, Purdue University Northwest Faculty Senate Chair Thomas Roach wrote in an email that he’d spoken with James Yackel, who served as chancellor for the Hammond campus — previously known as Purdue Calumet — from 1990 to 2001.
