A new round of negotiations is scheduled for October.

between the U.S. and China, global economic and political unrest threaten any progress in negotiations, let alone a deal to both countries’ liking.

This latest round of talks—the 13th between the two countries—will take place in Washington, D.C. in early October. But it’s unlikely that both sides will reach an agreement before another round of U.S. tariffs are levied on Chinese consumer and material goods. Chinese president Xi Jinping seemed to be preparing the country for a protracted fight with the U.S., instead of a speedy resolution, by telling the ruling Community Party leaders to adopt a “combat spirit” and prepare for “struggle” in recent speeches. He also blamed Hong Kong’s political unrest as an ongoing risk., each side wants significant concessions from the other in order to secure a deal, and both are nowhere near to letting those happen.

Analysts estimate that markets will react positively in the short term, but once talks begin, they could react negatively if it appears a deal isn’t forthcoming. If tensions between the two countries push back talks. The October round of talks was originally scheduled for this month. And if President Trump says anything to ratchet up the trade war and further inflame tensions.
