American forces launched a military strike in Kabul targeting a possible suicide car bomb that was aiming to attack the airport, say Taliban and US officials

The United States says it has destroyed an explosive-laden vehicle with an air strike in Kabul, hours after President Joe Biden warned of another terror attack in the capital as a massive airlift of tens of thousands of Afghans entered its last days.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a message to journalists that the strike targeted the bomber as he drove a vehicle loaded with explosives. Mujahid offered few other details. Only 300 American citizens still in Afghanistan are seeking to leave the country, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday, just days ahead of the US deadline for evacuations.

Some Americans, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told Fox News on Sunday, had chosen to stay beyond the August 31 deadline set to complete the evacuation, but he said "they are not going to be stuck in Afghanistan."The US has "a mechanism to get them out," Sullivan added, without elaborating.
