BREAKING: Trump's tariff increase on $200 billion in Chinese imports takes effect, heightening US tensions with Beijing.

A man browses an iPhone unit on display at a section selling Apple's products together with Chinese made electric appliances at a hypermarket in Beijing, Thursday, May 9, 2019. Ratcheting up tension ahead of talks in Washington, China vowed Thursday to defend its own interests and retaliate if President Donald Trump goes ahead with more tariff hikes in a dispute over trade and technology.

The Trump administration raised import taxes on $200 billion of Chinese imports from 10% to 25%. China’s Commerce Ministry said would take “necessary countermeasures” but gave no details. American officials accuse Beijing of backtracking on commitments made in earlier rounds of negotiations.“China deeply regrets that it will have to take necessary countermeasures,” said a Commerce Ministry statement.

Regulators have targeted operations of American companies in China by slowing customs clearance for their goods and stepping up regulatory scrutiny that can hamper operations.
