The U.S. Olympic Committee began the process of stripping USA Gymnastics of its NGB status last fall following repeated missteps in the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal, but the move was put on hold when the federation filed for bankruptcy in December.
USOC spokesman Mark Jones said in a statement Tuesday that the USOC has not challenged the stay in hopes it will give USA Gymnastics time to reach a settlement in civil lawsuits filed by Nassar survivors. More than 350 women have said they were abused by Nassar, the longtime USA Gymnastics and Michigan State team physician, under the guise of medical treatment.
“I’ve been in close contact with the USOC, and Sarah Hirshland as well. We have promised that we’d work very closely together in terms of resolving any further Section 8 ,” USA Gymnastics CEO Li Li Leung said Tuesday. Asked if there was a contingency plan should decertification efforts resume, Leung said there is a clause that would assign the trials contract to the USOC.
