Utah’s four U.S. House representatives introduced legislation last week that would allocate money for water conservation efforts aimed at protecting the Great Salt Lake. utpol utleg lincolngraves
The Secretary of the Interior would also gain increased flexibility to allocate unused funds from other sections of CUPCA to existing water conservation program, according to the release.
“By expanding the program’s geographical scope to cover the entire Great Salt Lake drainage basin, the bill aims to provide support to the State of Utah, local communities, and water districts north of Salt Lake County in their conservation efforts and initiatives to replenish the lake,” the release states.
Lake advocates, like Lynn de Freitas, executive director of Friends of the Great Salt Lake, are encouraged to hear about anything that addresses the lake’s crisis. But she certainly has questions. “I was looking for maybe how much is still left in the Central Utah Project budget,” she said, indicating one of her questions.“What is the discretion that the secretary has in terms of translating what money is available into specific projects that would be meaningful as far as water conservation that would benefit Great Salt Lake,” she asks.
She also wonders how the money would interface with tools that have already been developed without being redundant.“I have to give great credit to Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. John Curtis for their initiative in recognizing the fact that indeed, the lake certainly has great needs,” she said. “If they can be part of being effective in providing solutions for the lake, then by all mean, A-plus to both of them.
