After two quiet seasons at UTSA, Haynes took hold of the left guard spot midway through the 2020 season and held a starting role through 2021, splitting time between left and right guard. Almaraz and Allen competed for the job through the spring. Traylor said Almaraz claimed the top spot on the depth chart early only for Allen to pull “slightly” in front by the end of UTSA’s 15 practices.
Haynes highlighted Almaraz as a “feisty” player with a strong motor and heavy hands. Evaluating Allen, Haynes pointed to athleticism and feet that are “quick as lightning.” Newcomer Tatafu, a transfer from Independence Community College, was one of the first names Taylor highlighted and Haynes mentioned him as a standout from the group of reserves.
