UTSA walk-on Frankie Martinez balancing odd jobs with unexpected starting role

UTSA v UT on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022 at Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium.After most of the Roadrunners returned home following Wednesday’s practice and team meetings, right tackle Frankie Martinez had one last stop to make, picking up a job painting a door.
Though a string of injuries to UTSA’s offensive tackles have made him an unexpected starter, Martinez said he still picks up outside work once or twice each week, creating an unusual and challenging balancing act. Through a redshirt season in 2020 and a reserve role last season, Martinez’s friends and family often prodded him about when he might take the field. He never envisioned the excited reactions he finds now as he tells them he’s a starter.
“He’s going against guys who are superior to him athletically, and he just trusts his team and trusts his technique,” Traylor said. “Frankie has that walk-on mindset. He has that underdog role. He likes being doubted. … He’s an unsung hero who just keeps getting put out there in a situation and finding a way to show up.”
