As the only undergraduate facility of its kind, The James S. Markiewicz Solar Energy Research Facility at Valparaiso University has already been offering something special to the 400 engineering students there.
Thanks to a $200,000 United States Department of Energy-funded grant it will also contribute to solar energy technology development at large.Valparaiso University alumnus David-Paul Schulze works for Advanced Cooling Technologies of Pennsylvania. The 2022 VU graduate was given the opportunity in his role in the research and development team at ACT to design his own project for the grant which the company won.

How well we’re using captured sunlight is up for improvement. Photovoltaic panels, for example, currently have 15 to 20% efficiency with the industry aiming for 40 to 50% far off in the future.
ACT will produce a prototype and the VU mechanical and bioengineers will test it out. “Materials don’t like to heat up and cool down quickly,” said Krenzke. “So a lot of it goes into thermal stresses.”
