Last weekend, a relatively small sailboat sailed into the metro area waterways to bring a different message: not might, but peace.

Veterans for Peace’s “Golden Rule” brought a message of nuclear disarmament and support for the environment. Their mission: to remind Americans that the buildup of arms does not promote peace.

Sam Pesin, the president of the Friends of Liberty State Park, thanked the world-famous Golden Rule for bringing a message of world peace and justice to Liberty State Park. He said he was also grateful that the veterans advocate for public access to open space, which all people need for quality of life, especially “in this crowded, concrete urban area.”

Supporting local efforts was cited as success of the organization by Navy veteran Terrence Fitzgibbons, 40, of Fair Lawn, who has been an active member of Veterans for Peace for about a decade. Graduating from Notre Dame University on an ROTC Scholarship, the Bucks County, Pennsylvania, native served on three ships in Bahrain, Texas and Japan. In 2005, during Fitzgibbons’ commission, he flirted with becoming a CO but could not rule out all wars as unjust.

At Notre Dame, he studied Political Science and Arabic, which he described as “rusty” now. As a volunteer in Uganda, he taught “Introduction to Islam” to Catholic seminary students and English to 45 fifth-graders at a Catholic elementary school. He is more optimistic about supporting local issues like the Hackensack Riverkeeper. Capt. Bill Sheehan, whose tour I took through the wetlands years ago, once said, “When we work for the needs of people, we’re more likely to win our battles -- and when we do, the wildlife, the wetlands and the river -- they win, too,” according to Hugh Carola, program director at Hackensack Riverkeeper.
