Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit has unveiled a partnership with the U.K.'s Royal Air Force to send satellites into space with an incredibly short turnaround of just a week, and hopes to launch for the first time in late 2020.
One of the overriding goals of the project is to demonstrate how quickly Virgin Orbit can launch satellites into specific orbits for the RAF with very little notice. For some of the launches, Virgin Orbit will receive just one week’s notice before the RAF wants to launch, which is certainly quite rapid. Most modern rockets have wait times in the months or years.
The new project was unveiled by the U.K. Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt yesterday, July 18 at the Air and Space Power Conference in London. It was revealed that £30 million would be used to speed up the Artemis project in the hope of launching next year. "Ultimately, we are hopeful that by demonstrating the capability to quickly and easily deploy and replace satellites in Low Earth Orbit we will be helping to remove the incentive for any nation to invest the money in harming another nation’s satellite.”
