A law giving the state's residents more rights over their personal data went into effect this week
Businesses operating in Virginia were hit with a bevvy of new privacy mandates, this week — and Virginia residents were given a slew of new rights over their personal data.
The state’s Consumer Data Protection Act went into effect on January 1, making Virginia the second state after California to pass a comprehensive privacy law. In a nutshell, the law gives Virginia residents the right to know the kinds of data that large companies or online operators are collecting on them, and lets them opt out of having that data used for tracking and ad-targeting purposes.
For the most part, the law mimics what we’ve already seen on the ground in California, which enacted its own consumer privacy law, the Consumer California Privacy Act back in 2020. This week, California also enacted a slew of amendments to that law, offering consumers more rights over more kinds of data that companies can collect.
These are the sorts of exemptions that led tech players like Amazon and Microsoft to vocally support Virginia’s privacy law. Consumer advocates, on the other hand, have called the law equal parts “empty,” and “business-first.”
