An organization is looking for volunteers to help train puppies in the Luzerne County Area.American Vetdogs uses the State Correctional Institution in Dallas to raise the puppies but need trainers on the weekends.
Ferranti has been doing this program for 7 years and he’s the only advisor in Pennsylvania. He says while usually almost half of the dogs don’t graduate, he is at a 92% success rate.“I’d like to be up to 12, the problem is the weekend puppy raisers," said Ferranti. "I just don’t have enough of people that can take the dogs out and socialize them. If we just train in the prisons full time, we’re creating robots. And you know you want them to be dogs along with service animals.
He says what they do has an impact and the volunteers get to see it. He talked about a story from an at-risk veteran that inspired volunteers to keep doing the program.
