Regina RUSI is inviting civilian volunteers to stand as sentries with military for Decoration Day on June 5.

A military changing of the guard ceremony, similar to what occurs at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, is set to take place on June 5 at the Regina Cenotaph in Victoria Park. A sentry guard of six will stand around the cenotaph, in honour of veterans and their service for Decoration Day.

Brad Hrycyna, retired army major and president of the RUSI, said this is the first year the organization has planned this kind of event, but the hope is to make it an annual ceremony. Adults and youths are welcome to apply, the RUSI website says, and volunteers can wear what is appropriate for the occasion and weather. Arrangements can be made for volunteers unable to stand.

Decoration Day was the original day of remembrance in Canada when it was conceived in 1890. The June 5 celebrations moved to Nov. 11 in 1931 and it became Remembrance Day. Many veteran legions, including those in Regina and Moose Jaw, still mark Decoration Day by holding ceremonies and visiting graves of veterans to place Canadian flags.
