From Bexar County Judge to Abbott vs. Beto, here's your guide to the local and state races on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Joe Gonzales, a Democrat, is seeking reelection to a second term, touting reforms and experience against a challenge from Marc LaHood, who blames rising crime on those reforms. LaHood is the brother of the incumbent DA who Gonzales ousted in 2018.A career defense lawyer, LaHood has pledged to get violent criminals off the streets and rebuild trust with police officers who he says are frustrated by the incumbent’s policies.

The Bexar County district clerk is the registrar, recorder and custodian of all records of the state district courts, criminal and civil.Spears is a litigation paralegal with more than 20 years of experience, currently working at Martinez de Vara Law Firm. She pledges improved technology and transparency if elected.

This deep-blue seat containing much of San Antonio didn’t change much during this year’s redistricting cycle, and incumbent U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro is the hands-down favorite in the race.Castro, a former member of the Texas House of Representatives, is seeking a sixth term in Congress. He sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, among others, and chairs a subcommittee on international development, international organizations and global corporate social impact.

The 23rd, a sprawling district running from San Antonio to El Paso, has long been one of Texas’ few swing districts, but redistricting has made it a little redder. Donald Trump would have won the new district by 7 points in 2020, compared to less than 2 points under the old map.Gonzales, a former Navy cryptologist with two decades of military experience, is running for a second term.
