Holidaying at home again this year? VW has a box of tricks to make the experience more bearable. (Yes, we're confused by the pint glass of pasta too...)

As we know, everything is in short supply, inflation is rife and we're all skint. Life's grand, ain't it? But last summer, nothing competed with the rising prices of U.K. holiday homes in the Covid pandemic. So instead of renting a holiday cottage in Cornwall for £71,000 per week people turned to buying motorhomes, which meant they became more valuable than perpetual motion. And then, in desperation, they turned to buying up any old panel van and chucking a mattress in the back.

It used to be the case that a knackered-out Ford Transit cost less than a round at Wetherspoons, but last summer, even an old butcher's wagon was a billion pounds. Now, call me old fashioned, but splashing some lemon-scented Domestos around and plonking a mattress on top of entrails does not a Winnebago make. It makes me nauseous just thinking about it.

According to Volkswagen, 52 per cent of people say they intend to take their holidays in the U.K. again this year, so the problem isn't going away. Thankfully, here's Volkswagen's far more palatable solution. It is a 'mobile home in a box', available from all good Volkswagen retailers. And like all the best things it's simple: a range of modular units that fit into the existing luggage compartments of your Caravelle, California Beach Tour or Caddy.

The range starts at £495 for the folding comfort mattress, while the multi-purpose BusBox is priced at £3,340. This is compatible with a Caravelle T5, T6 and T6.1, and includes a bed, mattress and kitchen area - with space for a two-burner stove. It also has an extendable storage area and water supply. Without the mattress, the BusBox is £2,555. Meanwhile, if you own a Caddy, then there's the KombiBox to slips into the back.

James Allitt, Head of Aftersales at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said:"Our new camping accessory range makes travel more convenient for customers by combining all travel essentials, from utilities to water supply, in a smartly designed, comfortable, and compact space." And no entrails in sight. Happy holidays.
