The chief of Russia's Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has agreed to a truce for his forces to 'stop movement inside Russia, and to take further steps to de-escalate tensions,' the president of Belarus said.

President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, held two meetings to negotiate a deal that includes"security guarantees for the Wagner PMC fighters," the news release said. Prigozhin agreed to turn his mercenary forces back, saying on his official Telegram that he is"realizing all the responsibility for the fact that Russian blood will be shed." He said that troops marched"200 kilometers away from Moscow" without shedding a"single drop of the blood of our fighters."

Wagner forces had been moving north toward Moscow, a U.S. official confirmed to CBS News on Saturday, after appearing to take control of Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, a city near the border with Ukraine, Britain's Ministry of Defense said in an intelligence briefing. Central Moscow had heavy military trucks and armored vehicles in the streets and soldiers were deployed outside the main building of the Defense Ministry.
