The closed road was partially reopened, sparking protests at the lookout.

The road is dangerous and considered one of the steepest in the U.S. as it descends 1,000 feet into the valley with some areas at nearly a 40% grade.

“We have elders from the community born and raised in the valley that are there at the lookout, asking people respectfully to not go into the valley,” Ku Kahakalau tells SFGATE. A Native Hawaiian educator and member of the Protect Waipio Valley group, Kahakalau’s family’s roots are tied to the valley.

“The road ‘poses substantial endangerment to public health and safety and warrants preemptive and protective action in order to provide for the health, safety and welfare for the people who will be negatively impacted if the road fails,’” Kahakalau reads word for word from the. “This is a possibility in the future, if use of the road is to continue the way it is.”
