Walmart will discontinue sales of certain kinds of ammunition and ask customers to stop openly carrying weapons into its stores. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s important that the biggest retailer in the U.S. has picked a side, writes johnsfoley.

Walmart said on Sept. 3 it would ask customers not to openly carry weapons into its stores and would discontinue sales of some types of ammunition that can be used in military-style weapons.

It also said it would discontinue sales of handgun ammunition as well as sales of handguns in Alaska. It previously stopped such sales in the other 49 U.S. states. The U.S. retailer’s stores were the scene of two multiple shootings over the summer, including an incident in El Paso, Texas, that left 22 people dead.

Starbucks and Levi’s are among other retailers that have asked customers not to bring weapons into their stores. Walmart’s statement said it would not change its policy for concealed weapons. The White House said on Sept. 2 that it had drafted legislation that would expedite the death penalty for those found guilty of committing mass shootings, two days after a gunman killed seven people in west Texas.
