Temperatures in the Bay Area have been been well below normal for this time of year, but that’s about to change.
, the region is expected to experience a gradual warmup and get back to normal, reaching the mid-60s to mid-80s by the latter half of this week, said Matt Mehle, a lead meteorologist for the National Weather Service, on Sunday.
On Thursday, peak temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 80s are on the forecast for the Bay Area’s interior valleys, and by Friday, the coastline is expected to follow suit, climbing to the lower 70s. Saturday will be the warmest day of the week, soaring toward the upper 60s to mid-70s along the coastline and low to mid-80s in interior locations as an area of high pressure builds over the region and the jet stream — a narrow, high-altitude band of strong wind — shifts back to the north.
“In downtown San Francisco, the normal high for this time of year is in the mid-60s, and if we look at the average high so far for the month of May, temperatures have been 59 degrees,” Mehle said. “We’re below normal for this time of year so far, and granted, we’re only six days in, but it’s a chilly start.”
Look for seasonally cool temps to persist through mid week. Thereafter a warming trend will begin later this week and persist into next weekend.
