Quarterback Carson Wentz’s time in the nation’s capital is over.
The Washington Commanders released Wentz, the team announced Monday. The Commanders also cut safety Bobby McCain.
Wentz’s dismissal marks a disappointing one-year stint in Washington. Wentz was traded to Washington from the Indianapolis Colts last March prior to the 2022 NFL draft. He was due about $26 million in 2023. Wentz was expected to be the Commanders’ primary quarterback but only started in seven games; he had a 2-5 record. He played in eight contests. He passed for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions, resulting in an 80.2 passer rating.Wentz has seen a steep decline since he tore his ACL late in the 2017 season. Before going down with the knee injury, Wentz produced a career-best 33 touchdowns and had an 11-2 record as starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles traded Wentz to the Colts in 2021. He lasted one up-and-down season in Indy before the Colts shipped him to Washington. Wentz was originally drafted by the Eagles as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft out of North Dakota State. He’s tallied 22,129 passing yards, 151 touchdowns and 66 interceptions in 93 career games . He has a 46-45-1 record as a starting quarterback.
