WaPo’s Fred Ryan leaves journalism to run Center on Public Civility at Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute.

“One of the things President Reagan felt passionate about was being civil, reaching across the aisle and working together,” said Giller. “He hated the vitriol that existed in politics and society overall, and to be able to have the foundation create this center where we can actually tackle these issues head on … is something we’re really proud of.”

The Reagan Foundation did not recruit Ryan for the new position, Giller said, rather the idea came from Ryan himself and was excitedly embraced by the foundation’s executive team and its board of trustees. “I feel a strong sense of urgency in my next steps to address the decline in civility and respectful dialogue in our political process,” he stated. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the new Center on Public Civility which will play an important role in support of our democracy.”

“There was probably some clear messaging that this would be good time for a change, and in this announcement he gets to announce his own exit, he gets to move on to another spot, and nobody gets embarrassed,” Kahn said.
