A swarm of stinging insects takes the fun out of gardening in a hurry—and also can be dangerous.

Yellowjackets, like the Eastern yellow jacket shown here, are predatory wasps that build nests in the ground.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Are you worried about bees and wasps stinging you while gardening?

To answer Therese’s question, I spoke with Denise Ellsworth, program director of pollinator education at Ohio State University Department of Entomology. Because the swarming activity occurred in late summer and was from a ground nesting insect, Ellsworth zeroed in on the likely culprit as yellowjacket wasps. As with so much in gardening, Ellsworth said timing is everything when it comes to dealing with the safety issue posed by these creatures.

That means this is the time of year for watchful waiting. If you see a queen, look for a spot that she keeps going back to, because that behavior means she is building a nest there. Wasps make a papery comb, and an old comb or void signals a good nesting location to the queen, and she might start a new nest there.
