You could tell Avant-garde was on the right track when she delicately asked if the word “contained, like, the English name Murray which could be the name of a comedian," invoking the spirit ofinto the proceedings.
“I’m hoping that in a few years I’ll see a whole lot more African American females, and males too, doing well in the Scripps Spelling Bee,” said Avant-garde onon Friday morning, where she called spelling the “gate-opener to being interested in education.
