NASA engineers tested a half-scale version of the Dragonfly rotorcraft that will eventually explore the surface of Saturn's largest moon, Titan.
Now, NASA is taking lessons from the first rotorcraft to fly on another planet and applying it to a larger machine exploring Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Dragonfly will investigate Titan's surface, providing on an ocean world we know very little about. One advantage the rotorcraft will have over NASA's Mars Ingenuity is that Titan has a considerably thicker atmosphere than Mars, meaning it will be easier to fly. It also has lower gravity, so keeping the Titan rotorcraft airborne will be less challenging.
"We tested conditions across the expected flight envelope at a variety of wind speeds, rotor speeds, and flight angles to assess the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle," test lead Bernadine Juliano explained.
