Aided by free classes from the county water authority and a sizeable turf rebate, Chula Vista contest winners remove thirsty lawns, add drought-tolerant beauty to landscaping
When Denee and Bryan Felber bought their Chula Vista home back in 2011, the entire front and back yard were the quintessential SoCal dream: lawn. About three years in, the couple, who have four grown children, started to make some practical upgrades, installing both energy efficient windows and solar panels.
High maintenance and water needs prompted the Felbers to redo their front and back yard lawns, more than 5,000 square feet. Bryan served on Chula Vista’s planning commission and befriended a colleague who had a landscaping business called Quality Landscaping. The couple hired the company and, based off Denee’s design, they did all the heavy lifting, from scraping the lawns, grading, digging the dry riverbed and setting boulders to laying the drip irrigation system, planting the materials — purchased primarily at Terra Bella Nursery, but also at The Home Depot and Lowe’s — and spreading the gorilla hair mulch.
“And we get people stopping us when we’re out front, asking us questions,” added Denee. “It’s been a fun and easy way to encourage other people.”
