Alex Morgan, Naomi Girma head a quintet of World Cup-bound Wave players at Saturday's match between San Diego and OL Reign

The World Cup of women’s soccer is bigger than you might guess, and San Diego is now connected to it more so than ever.

Alex Morgan assisted a tying goal in her final Wave match before she joins the U.S. national team only for her World Cup teammate Sofia Huerta of Seattle’s OL Reign to answer with an assist in the 77th minute.Advertisement San Diego’s Danny Colaprico, left, and OL Reign’s Olivia Van der Jagt battle for the ball during the first half.Morgan showed eight days before her 34th birthday she has the speed and stamina to cope with younger competition. The striker logged a full 90 minutes and made several effective plays. Setting up Shaw’s goal, she drove the ball to the right corner and cut back to create an opening. She appears ready to lead the U.S. club in pursuit of a third consecutive Cup title.

The defeat dropped the Wave out of a third-place tie with the Reign, a longtime NWSL stalwart that’s won all seven matches against San Diego, including two in this year’s regular season.
