7:30 p.m. match in Los Angeles won't count toward NWSL standings; club plays at Chicago on Saturday before returning home July 8
The San Diego Wave will try to snap a three-match winless streak on Wednesday, when they take on rival Angel City FC in Los Angeles.
The latest edition of Southern California’s women’s soccer rivalry comes with an asterisk. Wednesday’s match is part of UKG Challenge Cup and won’t count toward the NWSL standings. It’s unclear which of the Wave’s stars will play in the 7:30 p.m. match at BMO Stadium. Alex Morgan and Naomi Girma were named the United States’ World Cup team last week.
Since beating Gotham FC on June 5, the Wave have tied with Racing Louisville and suffered 2-1 losses to both Angel City and Seattle’s OL Reign.San Diego will play Saturday at the Chicago Red Stars and July 8 against the Washington Spirit, with both matches counting toward the NWSL standings. Three consecutive UKG Challenge Cup matches will follow, with regular-season play returning for good on Aug. 19.
