Waymo is giving away free self-driving training data—but with restrictions
announced it would"open" a large dataset of self-driving training data
Waymo is not the first to release such a dataset. Earlier Lyft released a large one, and Baidu has for some time released their whole"Apollo" self-drive system in open source formats. But Waymo is widely hailed as the best in the business. Their data is good, and it also contains flat 2-D camera images which have been synchronized with LIDAR 3-D scans of the same scene, something else Waymo is good at.
As such, this isn't the data sharing that many in the world have hoped for, to speed up everybody's development. Waymo and others still consider their expensively gathered data to be part of their crown jewels, not to be handed out to competitors. Even so, fostering academic research attains some valuable goals. Many of the teams which have become big players began as academic projects, or had founders who came from academia.
