“Nineteen children. We aren’t meant to be able to process trauma like this,” says shooting survivor turned gun-safety activist Gabby Giffords.

. I’d already been covering mass shootings for two decades, but Gabby really helped me see the issue, and the realistic paths to change, more clearly.

We had an all-staff Zoom meeting the day after, on Wednesday. A number of us cried. Everyone is working around the clock to respond to this tragedy, and sometimes you have to compartmentalize in order to make it through the workday. On Tuesday, I was heartbroken. I was furious. I was frozen in shock, while also not surprised in the least that another tragic mass school shooting was unfolding in America. It’s days like Tuesday that shake you to your core, that tempt you to believe that all hope is lost.

After Newtown, we saw a shift on the issue of guns. All Americans—gun violence survivors, gun owners, even those who didn’t give guns a second thought—knew that this wasn’t okay, and that something had to be done. Even if major legislation didn’t pass in Congress, we saw massive progress in states across the country: 48 states have passed more than 466 strong gun laws. Gun violence is a multifaceted issue, with no one-size-fits-all solution.

When tragedies like this occur, it feels like the only thing that can be done is to get discouraged and lose hope. But one thing we can do in a very, very dark moment is reach out to those who might not agree with us on this issue, but are feeling the pain of this incident. This is a chance to connect when everyone is vulnerable, and when we all know this isn’t okay.

What are some of the big messaging mistakes you see—by well-intentioned liberals—that might alienate the gun owners in the middle? Are there any words, phrases, or ideas we need to remove from our vocabulary? It seems to me like you have to thread a tough needle: Fighting the NRA with all the fury you have, while not insulting all the people it is appealing to.
