Former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman is co-chairing a new political party alongside Andrew Yang, hoping to appeal to those seeking another option somewhere to the center of Republicans and Democrats.

called the party "moderately dumb," criticizing it for "mushy rhetoric" around issues like gun control, where Forward says it rejects extremes advocated by Democratic and Republican leaders.

Whitman spoke with Kerry Nolan on WNYC's Morning Edition Thursday to talk about the party and address the question: What can it, or any third party, hope to accomplish?Kerry Nolan: It's been more than 17 years since you wrote your book, which advocated for what you called "radical moderates." You made the case that the Republican Party was pulling too far right on social issues. And that was before the rise of President [Donald] Trump, and even before the Tea Party.

That's the center core. What we're going to do is go out, starting September, have a series of listening sessions around the country, asking the people: "What do you want? What do you think are the major issues? What do you think, how should we be approaching them?" And then in next summer, we'll have a convention, where we will develop a platform based on what the American people want.

And we hope that both liberals and conservatives, people all across the spectrum, will find a home there. They're not going to agree on everything. They never do, and never have. But they can still come together under those, with those basic principles. And we can start moving the country forward.
