Migrants board a bus headed to San Antonio, at Mission: Border Hope in Eagle Pass, Texas, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022. A surge of migrants crossing has been seen in the area. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott started busing migrants from South Texas to Chicago in late August in response to what he called a lack of federal government action on the border issue. The arrival of migrants in New York City and Chicago came as a surprise. Migrants in Chicago have been housed at area hotels and the Salvation Army.

Even before the center opened over the summer, San Antonio has long been a place that asylum seekers travel through to their final destinations. Since January 2021, more than 330,000 migrants have traveled through the city. Not all those people travel through the Migrant Resource Center. Instead, many go straight to the airport or bus station to head out of town. But Deputy City Manager Maria Villagómez said approximately 97,000 migrants had used the center since it opened.

As migrant arrivals rise, Villagómez said that the city could also start having more people wait at the airport or bus stations if their plane or bus is scheduled to pick them up soon.
