'Introspection, questioning and reflection are what is required of all of us if we want to not only grow but push ourselves — and the world we live in — in a direction that helps move all of us forward,' says naomishimada.
The COVID-19 crisis is changing our relationship with social media. As more people find themselves living under shelter in place guidelines, the morning Instagram scroll has turned into an hourly ritual. Platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter have all seen a surge in user activity in the last few weeks as people seek out news updates or momentary distractions. The increase in online activity can prevent boredom.
I will be using my existing accounts to share knowledge about things I feel might be helpful for people during this time, material to reflect on so we can think productively about the kind of world we want moving forward. I’m eager to share things that bring me joy, even in the harshest of times. I am [also] trying to get organized to be able to share my platform with others whose voices need to be heard [and] who can help heal us collectively by giving us the tools we need.
Even if I’m not scrolling, I feel like these apps are just a loud voice in the background. I don’t always want that around, so if I have a lot on my plate or I’m trying to have some quiet time just to be and think for myself, I have no qualms about deleting and redownloading when I have to.
