For the VMA’s, Howie made Lizzo two costumes that bring together a narrative. At first, the stage is cloudy and raining. Lizzo wears a raincoat. And then, BAM! She takes off the raincoat and becomes the sun. The rain clears. An apt metaphor: Lizzo is a ray of sunshine, both in fashion and life.“What I love about Lizzo is she’s so bright and fun and whacky, and always doing crazy stuff. I think that really reaches out to drag, everything’s loud and out there and in your face.
“The wedding dress for the BET’s has been one of my favorites because it has so much detail and I put so much handwork and embroidery in it and it came out amazing and we loved it,” Howie says. To date, Lizzo is Howie’s biggest client. But that’s soon to change. Every time he designs something for Lizzo, he gets a rush of attention and requests to create new outfits.
