Today's edition of Weather Words takes us all the way to Hawaii:

If you’ve visited Hawaii, you may have heard that the eastern side of each island is the “wet” side, while the western side is the “dry” side. This is because of the prevailing trade winds that blow from east to west, bringing showers that dry out as they go over the mountains at the center of each island.
However! In what we in the Lower 48 consider the “colder months” of the year, Hawaii can get cold fronts known locally asor Kona lows in which the wind blows from the south or southwest. These storms can produce heavy rain, thunderstorms and, on rare occasions, tornadoes.This was all new to me, and I only heard the term because a Kona storm started moving through the islands yesterday and will continue today.
