So why won’t NJ Transit get on board?

This is even more important than the quiet car, because it’s a safety issue. Some people are high risk for COVID or live with someone who is and have no other choice but to use public transportation. Yes, they can mask up themselves, but experts agree that one-way masking isn’t as protective as when everybody else is also masking in a public space.

Yet after a Florida judge overturned the mask mandate earlier this month and a reporter with CBS news asked NJ Transit squarely whether it was considering a mask car, the agency simply dodged the question. The statement it issued spoke only in general terms about the national mandate no longer being enforced.

So is the governor’s punting on the issue. “NJ Transit will evaluate whether designating certain cars as mask-only is prudent,” was all that Gov. Murphy would say through his spokesperson. After all, it’s a big concern for many New Jersey commuters. In Reich’s case, he’s trying to do all he can to protect someone close to him who has long covid, he told us, a person he sees regularly.
