Sam Darnold wants to play confident and fast as the 49ers’ offseason practices unfold with curiosity about him, Trey Lance and a rehabilitating Brock Purdy.
SANTA CLARA – A crescendo of hype ushered Sam Darnold onto the 49ers’ practice field, before he even threw a pass in his new No. 14 jersey.
During the media access period of last Tuesday’s organized team activity, Lance took all the first-team snaps, then yielded to Darnold and a second-string group. Both completed 11-of-15 passes in 7-on-7 drills, which did not include last year’s leading receivers Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings.
He’ll celebrate his 26th birthday next Tuesday, so he’s not an old man, but he’s been through and contributed to a heck of a lot of struggles in five NFL seasons, much more than his 23-year-old colleagues, Purdy and Lance.with the 49ers , former Panthers teammate Christian McCaffrey vouched for him. Playing – and learning – under Shanahan will enhance Darnold, Gore believes. Darnold worked with five coordinators over his previous five seasons.
If a poor supporting cast doomed Darnold on five straight losing teams – 4-12, 7-9, 2-14, 5-12, 7-10 — that won’t be an issue with the NFC runners-up 49ers, who are bursting with Pro Bowl talent.The 49ers’ comes with McCaffrey, Samuel, Kyle Juszczyk, George Kittle and Trent Williams, not to mention Aiyuk and Aaron Banks, a pair on the Pro Bowl path this coming season.
