'Boy Scout'? Think again...

Superman is often declared an outdated and boring character by critical readers, but at least one DC Comics writer has a strong rebuttal for those arguments, suggesting that the opposite is true, and that what the attributes that make him seem "boring" to some are what make him exciting to others. According to writer Mark Russell, the Man of Steel’s clean-cut image is what makes the character endure.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Speaking at the “Superman & Batman: World’s Finest” panel at Dragon Con 2023, Superman: Space Age writer Mark Russell explained how Superman’s supposed “Boy Scout” image doesn't make the character boring, but rather fascinating to write. “The thing that most people find boring about Superman is what I find most interesting," Russell told the audience. "How do you keep all that power and yet still remain humble or empathetic?”Superman’s Human Qualities Are What Make The Character Special Ever since prevailing societal norms were challenged by the counter-culture movement of the 1960s, the character of Superman has found himself sometimes portrayed as the poster-child of outdated values.

Superman: Space Age Keeps True To the Man of Steel’s Roots As Russell explained at Dragon Con, it all boils down to the core humanity of the character – what Superman's critics misinterpret as the character’s “Boy Scout” image is really just an extension of the hero’s deep reservoir of empathy. These are the themes Russell tackles in Superman: Space Age, his Black Label series produced with artist Mike Allred.

Time and time again, the creators of Superman: Space Age challenge Superman with the social issues facing America, whether depicting the Civil Rights Movement or the political corruption of the Watergate scandal – all of it designed to present moral dilemmas, the kind of threats to “truth, justice and the American way” which cannot be defeated with physical strength, but rather must be confronted with empathy, grace, and poise.
