A little more than a year ago, Donut City owner John Chhan was dealing with the worst of times and the best of times.
“I was so happy,” Stella, 64, said of hearing John’s stories of the community’s support. “They all care about me.”
She went home and decided to rest. But when she wouldn’t wake up hours later, John got her to the hospital. Customers in Seal Beach bought all of John Chhan’s fresh-baked doughnuts in 2018 so that he could leave his store earlier to be with his wife, Stella, who was in a Costa Mesa nursing home after being diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. Stella recovered and is now back in the store.
Many tourists, from as far away as Canada, Germany and Japan who had heard their story, also stopped by Donut City to take a picture with Stella.
