The Georgia Democrat announced she does not believe serving in the Senate would be “the best role for me in this battle for our nation’s future.”

Georgia’s Stacey Abrams, a rising star in the Democratic Party, officially ruled out running for Senate in 2020 but left the door open for a White House bid—either as president or vice president.

It had been widely speculated that Abrams would run for Senate after she lost Georgia’s gubernatorial election during the 2018 midterms. Her face-off against Republican Brian Kemp became one of the most closely watched races of the election cycle and garnered the attention of former President Barack Obama, 2020 candidate Joe Biden, Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities.

In her video announcement on Tuesday, Abrams said that she did not believe serving in the Senate would be “the best role for me in this battle for our nation’s future.” She quickly added that she will do everything in her power to make sure Georgia elects a Democrat to the open seat. She said at the time that “2028 would be the earliest I would be ready to stand for president, because I would have done the work that I thought necessary to be effective in that job.”
