What modern American parents can learn from traditional cultures | Opinion
It’s not that parents in any sense abandon them. It’s not that they don’t care. Rather, it’s that the labor-intensive, years-long process of guiding a child to transform into a well-socialized member of family and community is not their job. It’s the job of the other children in the community and/or of the youngster’s older sibling .
But here’s the thing: The social and economic circumstances in which traditional families live are unlike ours in countless ways. In these conditions, it makes sense for the children to raise each other. Surprised? Keep in mind that most or even all the adults are visible, busily doing their adult things. Evidence from many traditional societies reveals that the children want to become like the adults — their beloved parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles — and therefore watch, imitate, and practice the adults’ activities, find ways to assist, and gradually take their rightful place in family life.

American Airlines pilots approved the mandate ahead of the busy summer travel season to further pressure the Texas-based carrier for a contract, although the chances of them actually walking off the job remain slim. The Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents 15,000 American Airlines pilots, held a strike authorization vote in April, even as the two sides closed in on an agreement in principle.
