Former President Donald Trump surrendered to and was released by Fulton County officials on Thursday night, setting in motion the next phase in the Georgia election interference case.

Trump and 18 co-defendants are facing sweeping charges, including violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, in alleged efforts to overturn the state's 2020 general election results. So far, 17 defendants, including Trump, have surrendered to authorities.

The district attorney had stated she intended to try all 19 defendants together. Willis had also said since the indictment earlier this month that her team of prosecutors would need roughly six months before a trial could start. Now, she has had to modify her schedule rapidly. Under Georgia law, defendants who make demands for a speedy trial in Fulton County are supposed to go to trial within four months. If not, it could be grounds for dismissing the charges altogether.
